The 1599 Geneva Bible

Imagine if the President of the United States outlawed your version of the Bible because he considered it to be a threat to his rule. Imagine that he authorized a new Government "approved" version for you to read instead. That's exactly what happened in the tumultuous year of 1611. King James despised the revolutionary and "seditious" Geneva Bible. He thought the Geneva Bible's study notes on key political texts threatened his authority, so he outlawed it and ordered a new translation of the Bible - the King James (Authorized Version). While the King James Version is an excellent translation, it was edited and authorized by the Government. The Geneva Bible was not. It was truly a Bible by the people and for the people.

The Geneva Bible is unique among all other Bibles. It was the first Bible to use chapters and numbered verses and became the most popular version of its time because of the extensive study notes. These notes were included to explain and interpret the Scriptures for the common people and laid the foundation for a Republican form of government. For nearly half a century these notes helped the people of England, Scotland, and Ireland understand the Bible and true God-ordained liberty.

When the Pilgrims arrived in America in 1620, they brought the 1599 Geneva Bible. You can see why this remarkable version with its profound study notes played a key role in the formation of the American Republic. Today, the 1599 Geneva Bible has been all but forgotten. Thankfully, we've brought it back into print in a beautiful, easy-to-read format with updated English spelling and punctuation. This remarkable Bible is available in leather or hardback binding.

  1. AWESOME BIBLE

Branden Ruiz (NW Indiana) (Submitted on 17th Oct 2016)

This is an awesome Bible, so grateful for the Word of God! I originally bought this Bible because I wanted to own a Bible that was "older than the KJV." The content and flow of this Bible is beautiful! Make sure to read the content (prefaces, prayers, introductions etc..) before the Old Testament and after the New Testament; some of the "best" prayers I have ever heard from our Reformation fore-fathers! I enjoy the weight of this Bible, hefty, not like a thin-line Bible and the pages seem to be of high quality. I have not yet had a chance to pop in the CD-ROM and go through the content but am looking forward to. I have looked through the facsimile versions of the 1560 Geneva Bible and it seemed to be very hard to read, let alone read an entire book of the Bible. Tolle Lege Press did a great job updating this 1599 Geneva Bible to something that is able to be read with retaining the notes, comments, and feel of a Bible read in the 1500's by the common "plowman." Thank you!

    *~ Soli deo gloria~*

  2. Ever heard of the 1599 Geneva Bible?

Howard Williams (Submitted on 28th Sep 2016)

When I ask that question, I get much the same answer. Never heard of it. They make a wonderful gift, When you say "it is the first Bible with chapter and verse with notes". The fore runner Bible of The King James version. The last one is the fourth one I have purchased , for gift sand the one I use is the Patriot's edition. Every true Patriot that loves God needs one.... HW

  3. Truth seeker

Bruce (Submitted on 25th Feb 2016)

I am probably a rarity among Christians, in that I do not except anything on face value. I must do as my God commands - Prove all things. My first step, was to prove that God is real. With out this vital step, a Christian is no better off than the evolutionist, who embraces a theory with blind allegiance. When I discovered The Geneva Bible, I knew that I must have one. God reveals new truth, to those who seek it.

  4. Font too small and too light

Unknown (Submitted on 19th Nov 2015)

I was so excited to get our new bible but to my disappointment, I have found it very hard to read as the font is small and the connotation font is so light, it is a great deal of work to read it.

  5. Nice bible

Walter Heuer (Submitted on 24th Sep 2015)

Nice Bible. Font is rather small. Would like an edition with large fonts.

  6. Great Bible

    Mike G. (Submitted on 29th Apr 2015)

Great addition to my Bible library.

  7. As beautiful as I hoped it would be.

Rev. Michael Traylor (Submitted on 14th Feb 2015)

I want only the absolute truth of God's word. This volume as well as the 1611 King James are infallible tools in comparing the ESV and other translations that change the original text to the point that it is unrecognizable.

  8. Nice looking Bible

    William A. A. (Submitted on 3rd Jan 2015)

Binding is as good as any I have seen. Printed on good paper, should last as well as other premium Bibles. Footnote tell you what the Reformers and Seperatists were thinking as well as good explanations of very many passages. One thing though, print or font size could be a size or two bigger. Even so, the ptint is extremely clear and sharp to the eyes.

  9. Geneva Bible

Unknown (Submitted on 24th Dec 2014)

Item arrived promptly and in excellent condition. Very satisfied with the service. Was pleasantly surprised by the two for one special.
