C. I Scofield (1843-1921) died ninety years ago. Yet even today his name remains well-known and highly influential among evangelical Christians. Though C. I. Scofield was a Presbyterian, most fundamentalist Baptists today claim him as their own. In fact, they are more acquainted with C. I. Scofield the Presbyterian than C. H. Spurgeon (1834-92) the great Baptist preacher of the same general era. Even if people do not know his name, however, the dispensational theology he helped promote is deeply ingrained in the way they read and understand the Bible. His Scofield Reference Bible is one of the most influential publications in the modern church Scofield gained a reputation for being a theologian of unquestioned orthodoxy, dazzling originality, and incredible profundity. But was he really orthodox? Were his notes in the Scofield Reference Bible original? Could he possibly have been more confused than profound?
