The genius of Puritanism, as Peter Lewis has called it, rests, first and foremost, in the fact that the Puritans saw all of life as under the dictates of Holy Scripture, the infallible, inerrant Word of God. Above everything else, the Puritan movement was a Bible movement. Scripture was the axiomatic starting point of the Puritan worldview. All of life is theocentric and sacred; it is to be lived coram Deo ("before God"). And the goal of life, according to the Puritan understanding of Scripture? Is to glorify God and enjoy Him forever.
